Privacy Policy

Janus is a private personal-finance app for a shared household, made by John Hilmes. The Janus iPhone app connects your Apple Wallet accounts to your own Janus dashboard. This policy covers the iPhone app and the Apple Wallet data it sends. Accounts you connect on the Janus website, such as a bank, stay private to you in the same way.

Only with your permission, given in Apple's authorization sheet, and only for the accounts you choose: Apple Card, Apple Cash, and Savings with Apple. For those accounts the app reads account names, balances, credit limit, payment due date and minimum payment, and transactions (amount, date, merchant name and category, description, type, and status). You can change which accounts are shared, or turn access off, at any time in your iPhone's Settings.

The app sends this data over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) only to your own Janus account. It signs in with a device token you create in Janus. The token is kept in your iPhone's Keychain, and Janus stores only a one-way fingerprint of it, never the token itself. For its Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, the app also keeps a short summary on your iPhone: how long your cash lasts, your net cash, your net worth, and the next few charges and deposits. Each refresh replaces it, disconnecting deletes it, and the Lock Screen hides its amounts while your iPhone is locked.

Only to show you your balances, spending, cash runway, and card payments. Your data is never sold and never used for advertising or tracking. The app contains no analytics and no third-party SDKs.

Only you. Other members of your household cannot see your Apple Wallet data. It is not shared with anyone, except the providers that host Janus's servers and database (Vercel and Neon) so the service can run.

Janus keeps your data while your account uses it. To stop syncing, disconnect your iPhone in Janus or in the app, or turn off access in your iPhone's Settings. To have imported data deleted, email hello@johnhilmes.com.

Janus is not intended for children under 13.
