Pneumatic Architecture — 2018

Osmos.

An inflatable pavilion that makes architecture soft: stitched airbeams, a bouncy floor, and a space shaped by the people inside.

Folio

Osmos is a hyperboloid formed from inflatable airbeams, joined along their upper two-thirds and individually clipped to an anchored ground skirt below. This interactive study models a 24-foot-tall structure with a 24-foot clear inner diameter at its base.

Inside, a 24-foot annular bounce floor surrounds a removable eight-foot disk. The disk can fill the center opening or sit on the surrounding ring. Six blowers sit within evenly spaced airbeam bases, with optional 20-foot hoses allowing them to operate at a distance.

Explore the structure in the pavilion studio: orbit the camera, switch the cutaway on and off, change inflation, unclip individual airbeams, reposition the center disk, and bounce the floor. The simulation is an illustrative study; estimated dimensions and material behavior are identified in its model notes.
